As a result of the founding of Connradh na Gaeilge by Douglas Hyde, the national spirit of Ireland was re-established in the period of the 1890's to 1900's. Achill became part of this movement. In 1910, a summer school for the teaching of Irish, piping, promotion of the traditional Irish customs, and music, song and dance was held in Achill. All involved were encouraged to wear the national dress. This event was called "Scoil Acla". People came from all over Ireland for the opportunity to express their national pride.

One of the organising committee, a Mrs. Weddall, introduced the famous artist, Paul Henry, to Achill and, as a result, many other artists followed. These, in turn, were followed by art students and others wishing to learn Irish traditions.

This same Mrs. Weddall had the Scoil Acla Hall built for the performance of plays. Paul Henry became a member of Scoil Acla and directed the play by Douglas Hyde, 'Casadh an t-Sugain' (The Twisting Of The Rope).

Alas, this summer school had died by the mid 19-teens and it was not until 1985 that a group of people decided to relaunch the summer school incorporating all the aims of the original school.

"Scoil Acla" today has grown into being the oldest and most successful of all Summer Schools, developing at a local level and inviting visitors, from all over the world, to participate and share in this unique island cultural experience.
